How It All Began
At just 10 years old, my daughter Karesha discovered a love for designing unique outfits for her dolls. But unlike traditional doll fashion, she didn’t use fabric, sewing machines, or even glue. Instead, she crafted each piece using only paper and scissors a true testament to creativity and resourcefulness.
Her designs range from elegant gowns to bold everyday wear, often featuring intricate headwear. She uses everything from construction paper and notebook paper to recycled newspapers and magazine clippings. What makes her creations even more special is her ability to fold, layer, and shape the paper into stunning, wearable doll fashions, all without a single drop of glue or tape!
As a mom of an autistic teenager, I’ve seen firsthand how creativity can be an incredible outlet for self-expression. Many children on the spectrum have unique ways of engaging with the world, and Karesha’s paper doll couture is a beautiful reflection of that. It’s a reminder that art, design, and play don’t have to follow traditional rules they can be anything we imagine them to be.
Paper fashion has also been an amazing way for Karesha to develop fine motor skills, patience, and a strong sense of pride in her work. For other parents and caregivers of autistic children, this can be an inspiring and accessible activity to encourage imagination, focus, and self-confidence.
Introducing "Paper Couture for Dolls: Karesha’s Handmade Fashion Journey"
To celebrate her passion, I’m excited to introduce our upcoming book, "Paper Couture for Dolls: Karesha’s Handmade Fashion Journey." This book will showcase her most stunning designs, highlight her creative process, and inspire other children, especially those in the autism community, to embrace their artistic talents.
If you’re looking for a creative, screen-free activity for your child, or if you love the idea of handmade doll fashion, this book will be a must-have!
